Selecting and Identifying Alaskan Malamutes

Choosing the Right Alaskan Malamute

1. Fundamental Criterion: Health

  • The fundamental baseline for selecting an Alaskan Malamute is its health. A healthy Alaskan Malamute exhibits a vibrant and alert demeanor, whether in adulthood or puppyhood. Bright and clean eyes reflect their overall well-being. Their sensitivity to the surroundings, demonstrated through reactions to stimuli like toys or treats during selection, is an essential aspect to observe.

2. Vaccination History

  • The chosen Alaskan Malamute should have a documented vaccination history. Starting with puppies is common due to their lower immune resistance and incomplete physical development. Vaccination enhances their immunity, preventing the spread and impact of infectious diseases before introducing them to new environments.

3. Physical Examination During Selection

  • During the selection process, gently touch the entire body of the Alaskan Malamute with both hands. This examination helps check for scars, assess body condition (whether overweight or underweight), examine the coat’s glossiness and smoothness, and identify signs of parasitic infections. These factors contribute to determining the overall health of the dog before making a purchase.

4. Observing Stool Condition

  • Observing the stool condition provides insights into the dog’s health. Healthy stool should have a moderate consistency, allowing it to be picked up without sticking to the ground, and typically appears in a soil-yellow color. Abnormalities such as overly soft or hard stool, or unusual colors like green, black, brown, or white, may indicate underlying health issues. Caution should be exercised when encountering such conditions during the selection process.
