Selecting and Identifying a Chow Chow
For first-time Chow Chow owners, it is advisable to visit homes where this breed is raised to observe their appearance, characteristics, and basic traits firsthand. Additionally, thorough research on available information about the breed is essential to have a good understanding when making a selection. Pay attention to the following points:
- The head should be broad and flat. If the head is narrow, elongated, or triangular, it is likely a mixed breed and should not be considered.
- The tongue should be blue. If the tongue is red, pink, or has red spots, it indicates a mixed breed and should not be purchased.
- Ears should be small, triangular, slightly forward-leaning, and erect. Large or drooping ears are not desirable.
- The nose should be broad and wide with open nostrils. Eyes should be slightly slanted, almond-shaped, and have a deep brown or black color around them and on the nose.
- The muzzle should be wide, and when closed, the upper lip should cover the lower lip. Gums and lips should be black, and teeth should be evenly aligned with a scissor bite.
- The neck should be strong and full, while the body, back, hindquarters, and limbs should be relatively short. A wide and deep chest and a muscular waist are desirable.
- Limbs should be short and robust, with straight front legs and well-muscled hind legs. The paws should be cat-like with thick pads.
- The tail’s root should be high, and it should curl upward onto the back with long and fluffy hair, creating an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- The coat should be dense, straight, and long, with a soft and cotton-like texture. Especially, the hair around the head and neck should be fluffy, resembling a lion’s mane.
- Coat colors can be solid, including black, white, cream, red, blue, fawn, silver, but must not have markings or mixed colors.
- When making a purchase, request documents such as pedigree certificates, vaccination records, a signed transfer certificate, and a health guarantee certificate valid for 7-14 days from the seller.
These criteria will help ensure that you choose a purebred and healthy Chow Chow that meets the breed standards.
