Old English Sheepdog’s Behavior and Habits:

The Ancient Shepherd Dog’s behavior towards strangers is guided by its assessment of the opponent’s strength based on its line of sight. When a stranger approaches, the perceived pressure from above can make it uneasy. If you adopt a low posture, it will accept you. If you appear lower than its eye level, it makes it more comfortable. The Ancient Shepherd Dog has a vulnerability on its right side and tends to act to protect its right side. When cornered and with nowhere to go, it positions its right side against a wall, presenting the left side to the opponent. This behavior is an innate instinct in the Ancient Shepherd Dog.

In social interactions, there are certain rules among Ancient Shepherd Dogs. They never attack an opponent lying down, exposing their belly. When an Ancient Shepherd Dog lies on its back with its belly exposed, it signifies submission and surrender.

Ancient Shepherd Dogs prefer humans over their own kind. This preference is not only due to the care and provisions humans provide but also because of the emotional bonds formed by companionship. Ancient Shepherd Dogs have a strong protective instinct towards their owners. Some Ancient Shepherd Dogs have been known to rescue children from water, burning buildings, or under vehicles. They willingly assist their distressed or injured fellow Ancient Shepherd Dogs.

Ancient Shepherd Dogs exhibit territorial behavior, claiming and protecting a specific area, preventing other animals from entering. They use secretions from anal glands to mark their territory, providing a unique scent. Additionally, they use sweat from sweat glands between their toes and scratch the ground with their hind legs to leave territorial markings.

Ancient Shepherd Dogs are highly jealous. If you divert attention to a new Ancient Shepherd Dog, neglecting the care of the existing one, it may become angry, deviate from established habits, and exhibit aggression and destructive behavior.
