Introduction to Chihuahua Breeds

Chihuahuas, the smallest among small dog breeds, are elegant, alert, and quick in their movements, making them widely adored for their symmetrical body structure and petite size. While Chihuahuas are beloved as adorable toy dogs, they also possess the hunting and guarding instincts typically found in larger breeds, along with the temperament reminiscent of terriers. This breed is divided into long-haired and short-haired varieties. Despite their tiny size, Chihuahuas are not timid around other dogs and exhibit a strong possessive nature towards their owners. The main distinction between the short-haired and long-haired varieties lies in the glossy, close-fitting, and silky short coat of the former. Long-haired Chihuahuas, in addition to having a thick coat on their backs, share the shivering tendency seen in their short-haired counterparts, which should not be mistaken for illness.

The Origin and Development of Chihuahuas

Currently, there is limited information regarding the origin of Chihuahuas. One theory suggests that their ancestors may be linked to the Aztec civilization that ruled the surrounding areas of present-day Mexico in the 9th century. The Aztec royalty reportedly kept a breed known as Techichi, similar to Chihuahuas but larger in size. Chihuahuas served a significant religious purpose at that time and were often buried with the deceased. As a result, Chihuahuas are considered one of the oldest dog breeds in North America. In the 19th century, Chihuahuas were introduced to Mexico from the United States, where they were crossbred with local primitive dogs. Initially, only short-haired varieties existed, and the long-haired Chihuahuas were later developed through crossbreeding with breeds like the Papillon.

Physiological Characteristics of Chihuahuas

The ideal weight for Chihuahuas should not exceed 6 pounds. Their body proportions are rectangular, with the length from shoulder to hip slightly greater than the shoulder height. A slightly shorter body in males is considered more ideal. Any weight exceeding 6 pounds is considered a disqualification.

Intelligence Description of Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas are exceptionally small and intelligent, ranking 67th in canine intelligence. Despite their lower ranking, they exhibit unique alertness and cleverness in daily life. With large eyes and a lively and cheerful personality, Chihuahuas observe their owners’ cues, follow commands, and successfully complete training. They enjoy playing and communicating with family members, displaying dependence, loyalty, and obedience. In training, repetition is key to achieving optimal performance, allowing Chihuahuas to develop conditioned reflexes and understand the meaning of their owner’s commands over time.
