Feeding Tips for Chihuahuas:
- Follow the original feeding method and gradually change the food: Abrupt changes in diet can lead to digestive issues and loss of appetite.
- Feed on a regular schedule and in controlled portions: Feeding irregularly or in excessive amounts can result in various health issues.
- Avoid excessive playtime: Continuous playing without adequate rest can lead to fatigue, weakened immune systems, and increased susceptibility to illness. Ensure at least 10 hours of sleep daily, especially for puppies.
- Acclimatize to new environments: Moving to a new place can cause stress and illness, particularly in puppies. Pay close attention to their needs and provide a comforting environment.
- Proper bathing practices: Bathing too frequently, especially immediately after bringing the dog home, can make them more susceptible to diseases. Allow a couple of days of observation before giving a bath.
- Avoid contact with other dogs and potential diseases: New dogs, even if vaccinated, should be kept away from others during the initial period to prevent possible infections.
- Isolate new dogs from existing ones at home: Observe the new dog for a few days to prevent the risk of spreading potential illnesses to other healthy dogs.
- Keep essential medical supplies: Maintain a supply of medical items such as a thermometer, eye drops, cold medicine, antidiarrheal medicine, ear mite drops, probiotics (for diarrhea and digestion support), and pet-specific medications.
- Limit chicken liver intake to no more than twice a week to avoid impacting bone development. Be mindful of forbidden foods (refer to the “Dietary Taboos” section).
- Ensure warmth, especially for puppies: Provide a well-insulated sleeping area with old clothes or specially tailored small garments for added warmth.
