Chow Chow: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Feeding Tips
Advantages of Chow Chow:
- Chow Chows have a very light odor despite their dense coat. Regular grooming ensures a clean body, making it easy for family members to have close contact with them.
- They are extremely loyal to their owners, often forming a strong bond with only one person throughout their life. Despite misconceptions about their intelligence, Chow Chows are quite smart and will remain devoted once they recognize their owner.
Disadvantages of Chow Chow:
- Chow Chows possess a strong sense of independence. In daily life, they can be somewhat aloof, particularly when around other dogs. Their strong personalities can bring joy but may also present challenges.
- Due to their ancient hunting origins, Chow Chows can exhibit territorial behavior and pride. Owners need to be attentive, understanding their unique personalities, and avoiding actions that might provoke them.
Feeding Tips for Chow Chow:
When it comes to feeding Chow Chows, it’s crucial not to provide excessive amounts of meat, as it can lead to skin issues. A balanced protein intake from sources such as eggs, rice, cottage cheese, and a small amount of meat is recommended. Rice is a commonly fed and easily digestible option that promotes a shiny coat.
For adult dogs, a recommended diet includes “moderate amounts of vitamins and protein.” It should be mixed with warm water (avoid using meat juice). If feeding dry food, ensure it has expanded properly, as dry food swelling in the stomach can cause severe twisting issues and potentially be fatal.
Many commercially available dog foods contain preservatives and additives that may negatively impact Chow Chows if consumed regularly. It’s advisable to maintain a consistent diet of regular foods (chicken or vegetable stew) to ensure their overall health.
Feeding quantities vary among dogs, with most Chow Chows consuming approximately 4 cups per day, divided into 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening, or all 4 cups in the evening, depending on convenience. The key is to avoid letting them self-feed, as overeating can lead to stomach bloating and potentially be fatal.
It’s not recommended to give dogs rawhide, as they cannot fully digest it, and incidents of dogs getting it stuck or causing harm have been reported. If you wish to provide a chewing option, natural beef knucklebones are a safer alternative.
