Afghan Hound Conformation
General Appearance:
The Afghan Hound is a noble breed, characterized by a dignified and aloof demeanor, free from any trace of ordinariness or coarseness. The ideal height for males is 27 inches (67 cm) with a permissible deviation of 1 inch, weighing 30 kg. Females should be 25 inches (64 cm) with a permissible deviation of 1 inch, weighing 25 kg. The front is straight, the head is proudly held high, and the eyes gaze into the distance as if recalling past times. The Afghan Hound’s notable features include an exotic or Eastern appearance, expressive eyes, long silky topknot, and a unique coat.
Coat:
The hindquarters, loin, ribs, forequarters, and legs are covered with dense, silky hair of fine texture. Ears and four feet have feathering. The hair from the shoulders to the rear forms a saddle-shaped area, slightly shorter and tight, creating a smooth back, a traditional feature of the Afghan Hound. The coat is naturally presented, requiring no trimming or grooming. The head has long, silky “hair,” a distinctive characteristic of the Afghan Hound. Shorter hair on the wrists of the front and hind legs is permissible.
Color:
Afghan Hounds may have various color combinations, each bringing its own charm. Less common color combinations may command higher prices due to market demand, aesthetics, or rarity. Regardless of color, Afghan Hounds exude a noble temperament—graceful, aloof, and cool. They possess long, flowing coats that, in a gentle breeze, create a beautiful and captivating sight. Common colors include black-masked red, black, brindle, cream (gold), white, sable, blue, and domino.
Head:
The head is of appropriate length, appearing delicate, with a balanced and harmonious relationship between the skull and foreface. A slight rise of the nose, forming a Roman profile, with the central line ascending to the slight (or absent) stop, disappearing in front of the eyes. A powerful and long jaw, forming a scissor bite.
Eyes:
Golden or dark, almond-shaped eyes with a slight Oriental slant.
Ears:
Long, covered with silky hair, low-set, and drooping close to the cheeks.
Nose:
Black, appropriately sized nose.

Sufficient length, strong and arched, forming a curved line connecting to the shoulders. Well-muscled with a slight arch.
